THE NAME ‘AER Lingus’ has proved to be quite confusing to international passengers of the Irish airline (no really), but we’ve never come across this before.
While discussing Aer Lingus on their morning show today, US TV hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest revealed they think ‘Lingus’ is a place in Ireland. Oh.
The pair were talking about Delta Airlines swapping terminals at Los Angeles International Airport, listing out a few of the airlines that would be affected by the move.

Aer Lingus is one of those airlines, and it inspired a strange conversation between the two hosts:

Seacrest: If you’re going to Canada, Air Canada. If you’re going to Lingus, Aer Lingus. I don’t know where that is… I think it’s in Ireland somewhere.
Ripa: Is that true? I’ve always been curious about Aer Lingus, but I’ve always been too embarrassed to ask. I’m like “What is Aer Lingus?” and I wanna go on it.
In fairness to them, how is anyone to know that ‘Aer Lingus’ is based on the Irish for ‘air fleet’, ‘aerloingeas’? We barely knew that.
How many other non-Irish folk have been labouring under this delusion? It might be time to issue a formal explanation to the world. Just a thought.
